Radar Technology

My activities in Microwave and Radar started during the study Electronic Engineering at the then Technische Hogeschool Delft, today Delft University of Technology:
  • calibration of a VHF Omni-Range (VOR) aviation direction finding system
  • calibration of a Sideways Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) Ku-band (10GHz) radar
  • data analysis of calibration flight using Luneberg lenses as interference-generating reference reflection
  • theoretical analysis of the above
Next followed my military service at the Royal Netherlands Air Force (Koninklijke Luchtmacht) as an ensign/lieutenant at the Luchtmacht Electronische en Technische School (LETS) in Schaarsbergen:
  • teaching basic course radar technology
  • support on Northrop NF-5 radar system
  • writing the instruction course on the new General Dynamics F-16 AN/APG-66 phased array multi-target radar

Once we had developed the Qubic4X technology (ft/fmax of 180GHz, see the section IC Technology) it became possible to design highly integrated IC's for radar front ends
  • 10GHz phased array digitally controlled phase shifter front end for scanning radar
  • see also my Key Note speech at the IEEE RF-IC Conference (Tampa Bay, 2014) specifically on the outlook on these developments
