Optical Communications

During my days at Philips Research (1985-1993) we worked on heterodyne-FSK and CPFSK Coherent Optical Transmission systems, at the time offering the highest performance in receiver sensitivity and bandwidth.
  • 2.5GHz balanced (noise cancelling) optical front-end
  • co-development of photo diodes with Philips LEP (Limeil-Brevannes)
  • wide band (1GHz) frequency discriminator
  • electronic system integration
  • system measurements
  • theoretical analysis detection mechanism and sensitivity penalties (which resulted in my PhD thesis with prof. Jens Arnbak in Delft, and the book "Coherent Optical System Design" at John Wiley & Sons.)
  • work resulted in 10 patents, 15 conference papers (ECOC, OFC), 15 scientific papers (IEEE, IEE) and 20 other publications

When back at the Nat.Lab. in 2000 my group worked on high-speed 12.5Gbit/s 20x20 cross-connect switches in SiGe BiCMOS technology. As TZA2060 this IC was briefly on the market until the business team was discontinued at the burst of the internet-bubble.
Later 40Gbit/s experiments were done using InP technology.

Since July 2015 I am Supervisory Board member of the Eindhoven start-up company Effect Photonics, which develops highly innovative 10x10 Gbit/s WDM CFP/2 modules using highly integrated InP Optical Integrated Circuits. Already 30 years in Optical Communication and Photonics!
